Dr. Kim Jaehwang, CEO of JSR Medical Co., Ltd., introduced next-generation medical device products at the ASCRS (American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery) Conference held in LA in 2017, drawing much attention from the medical community.
FDD (product name), developed by Kim, is a next-generation medical device that minimizes multiple complications from the conventional colorectal cancer surgery and eliminates the need for stoma which can dramatically improve patients’ quality of life.
Most of the colorectal cancer patients must undergo resection of the cancer-affected area, followed by an anastomosis and creating an artificial stoma (colostomy) fecal defecation until the anastomotic site is healed. However, many complications occur due to anastomotic leakage and stoma reversal surgery is required after the recovery period. Unfortunately, 12% to 40% of these patients cannot even receive the stoma reversal surgery due to complications, and because of this, they complain of the inconvenience of having to wear a ileostomy bag for the rest of their lives.
FDD, developed by Kim, minimizes these complications, eliminates the need for stoma creation and removal, and has a recovery period of only 3 weeks, compared to the conventional surgery which requires an average of 6 months. The FDD can also be easily removed at an outpatient treatment without surgery.
Yet the biggest advantage of this device from the patients’ perspective is that there is no pain and psychological stress of having to wear an ileostomy bag for the rest of their lives, so the medical community has expressed a strong interest and support for the development of FDD.
Through his presentation at the ASCRS conference, Dr. Kim disclosed the product development process and its efficacy, and promised that it would become a game changer in the existing colorectal cancer surgery.
